Quirks - Editing Your “hosts” File in Vista

I thought I would post this little snippet of information because it helped me.

If you’re looking to modify your ‘hosts’ file in Windows Vista, you won’t be able to by default. If you happen to come by it, Windows will say that the file doesn’t exist (or a similar message) when you try to save it.

In order to edit it follow the instructions below:

1)  Browse to Start -> All Programs -> Accessories
2)  Right click “Notepad” and select “Run as administrator”
3)  Click “Continue” on the UAC prompt
4)  Click File -> Open
5)  Browse to “C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc”
6)  Change the file filter drop down box from “Text Documents (*.txt)” to “All Files (*.*)”
7)  Select “hosts” and click “Open”
8)  Make the needed changes, save, and close Notepad

I’m not against Vista - or Microsoft for that matter - like some (many) developers that I’ve talked to, but this is one of the little quirks in Vista that can just drive me nuts!
